 Food Diary

For the most when I buy Peruvian products I purchase imported goods for Peru, basically the same items you could buy in a supermarket in Peru.

After Covid I find it quite difficult to find Peruvian goods in New York. When I visited the hispanic supermarket I was surprised to see Goya had Peruvian corn. I also checked the label and the only ingredient was the kernels.

Choclo aka Jumbo Kernel corn variety of field corn from the Andes It has a more mild flavor compared to other varieties of field corn, and is better suited for human consumption. The stalks reach up to 18 feet in height, a runt in a litter of this cultivar would tower over standard varieties at 14 feet.

The word choclo derives from the Quechua word choccllo and has since taken on a broader context within the Spanish language, often being used to refer to cobs of corn in general.

According to Agrodata Peru, Peruvian corn main exports goes to the following countries : Spain, Japan, USA, China, Chile and Greece.

Comment on a Forum I found :

I grow Peruvian corn but I plant it in mid August and it's ready at very the end of November beginning of December here in central Florida in full sun zone 9b. It only gets 7ft tall and tassels and silk normally. I time it so that it starts on 13 hrs sunlight and ends with 11 hrs by the time is done so that it grows normally. This timing works well with tropical corns.

HEME : The ingredient is also referred to as genetically engineered “heme,” soy leghemoglobin. It is the color additive Impossible Foods uses to make its plant-based burger appear to “bleed” as if it were beef.
